And reportedly again in 2003, 2016, 2020 and now in 2026. All for the same crime. He's from Tamil Nadu, well-spoken in English, neatly dressed and knows exactly how high-end hotels function. And his modus operandi is very simple. He checks into a luxury hotel, introduces himself as a yoga instructor, or an English teacher, or sometimes even a tour guide. Sometimes he's Michael Joseph, Vijay Karan, Rajiv Desai. Depends on his mood, really. And he always has just two bags. One bag contains his clothes and other utilities. The other has newspapers and pillows. That's the bag John uses to quietly sneak out expensive hotel items.
