Just days after the resumption of Imphal Gohati bus services through Kangpokpi and Sinapati districts, fresh violence was reported from Tapau and adjoining areas of Sinapati in the early hours of August 2014. According to sources on the ground, an arson incident was first reported at around 2.40 a.m. at Tapau Kuki village located along National Highway 2. The situation escalated after 4 a.m. when several Naga houses at 9MR and Marai Mei were reportedly targeted and damaged. The affected properties reportedly included houses belonging to residents of Lai and Kuba villages. At around 9.20 a.m. the situation turned tense after gunfire broke out in the area. Some journalists were still at the spot, covering the incident and recording footage of the burnt and damaged houses when the firing began. During the exchange of fire, a 54-year-old constable of the 36th CRPF sustained a gunshot injury at Liangmai Tapau. He was rushed to the district hospital in Senapati and is undergoing treatment. So far, no civilian injuries or casualties have been reported. The situation remains tense, with heavy security deployment in the area to prevent further violence. The Central Reserve Police Forces CRPF Cobra unit on August 25th conducted a door-to-door search operation in Tapawling Mai and surrounding areas of Senapati district, a day after fresh tensions in the area left a CRPF personnel injured. District police personnel accompanied the Cobra team during the operation. CRPF personnel searched houses and carried out checks in the surrounding areas. Female CRPF personnel searched rooms inside the houses, while male personnel checked the exteriors and nearby areas. The operation was carried out without resistance from local residents or house owners. No one has been detained so far. There was no official information on whether the search operation led to the recovery of weapons or other warfare-related items at the time of filing this report. The search came a day after a 54-year-old CRPF constable of the 36th Battalion sustained a foot injury during tensions in the area on Monday. The injury is suspected to have been caused by a bullet. No fresh tension was reported in Taphau on Tuesday. Security personnel, however, continued to remain deployed in the area. On Monday, several houses belonging to members of both the Kuki and Naga communities were burned and damaged in Tapau Kuki and Tapau Naga following an exchange of fire in the area.
