Summary
The BJP has not taken action against hate content on Instagram that goes viral against Muslims. The speaker suggests that the algorithm of social media platforms is designed to promote content that triggers anger and rage.
“Anger is the biggest driver of content.”From the report
I think what the BJP has not looked at, or maybe they can take some, which is actually a bad idea to give them, but there is a lot of hate content on Instagram that goes unchecked and that goes viral against Muslims. All those videos that we see of the kind of abuses, you know, this guy who used to sit in his car and keep like rattling off. Yeah, the bearded one. A lot of misogyny, a lot of unchecked hate against Muslims. There's Gauraksha Dal. They're called Mrityu Dal, death squads. They pronounce themselves as death squads on Instagram. They show these videos. This guy who had, we had done a documentary on Monu Manesar. These are all Instagram phenomena. So, I mean, if they want to understand what's working, there's also an arm of their own. Yes, the extension of their ideology that works. but they don't take action against them. But on the algorithm things, I was just, is this something to debate? But I don't think Meta really has a control on algorithms in that sense, or at least it's not transparent enough. They've designed the rules through which something goes viral. But ultimately, what's going viral is actually people have a lot of control over that. Absolutely. But it's not that something is being imposed on us from outside, which is what the BJP is thinking. We don't know that also, right? I mean, I mean, I don't know what, because I know there was a piece that was a while ago, and that was a logic that had been settled, that anger is the biggest driver of content. If something can trigger you into anger and rage, it will get shared. The virality was directly proportional to how angry it makes you. So this was a Facebook logic, which is why the more, you know, hateful content, the more. So the incentive structure was completely warped. Now, whether that is still the case, I don't know. And they are so opaque about it.
