Death toll of one of Assam’s worst floods since the 1950s crossed 100 on Monday.

Assam needs our attention. I am in the Shivsagar district of the northeastern state of Assam right now and the situation here is heartbreaking. The flood first hit this district almost three weeks ago on the 20th of June. It's 10th of August today so it's almost three weeks and still you can see this is the situation. You can see that there are several houses to my left and people are trying to salvage whatever little bit is left. They're trying to wash their clothes in this dirty water. Most of these people don't have anything left here because while now you see that the water is almost to my knee level, till a few days ago, this water had submerged their houses. 100 people have died in these floods till now. More than 7 lakh people have been affected by these floods. And you can see that several NGOs like the Hemkunt Foundation are providing relief material, food, water, utensils. But these people now have to rebuild their entire lives. everything from their cash, their utensils, their food has all gone underwater. Let me tell you that this is an unprecedented situation. It's also very slippery here. Okay, so this is an unprecedented situation because this part of Assam has almost never witnessed these kind of floods. These people are telling us that for generations, they have not seen such a bad flood in this part of the state. So these people had never prepared for a flood like this. And within just a few moments, within just a few hours, their entire lives changed. They had to leave this place. They had to save their lives.
