“Does this look like a meal to you?”From the report
Does this look like a meal to you? That too a nutritious meal that should be served to underprivileged kids to encourage them to come to school? Well, this is what's being served in the name of midday meals to students of a government school in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur. This meal just has some watery curry with barely any vegetables along with some burnt rotis as you can see in these videos. You can even see how these poor kids are trying to eat this substandard food, the food that's ideally supposed to be the most nutritious meal of their day because they come from families that simply can't afford proper meals thrice a day. Now, after these videos of the Changapur Primary School in Sitapur went viral, the local authorities have confirmed that this was indeed the meal being served to students and the head teacher of the school has been suspended for this. But interestingly, on the same day, in the same state, UP, kids of another government school were served sabzi and roti directly on their hands instead of on plates. This has also been confirmed by local officials. This incident reportedly happened in a school in UP's Balia in April, but the video only went viral now. So, it's only now that the school's principal has been suspended over this. It's amusing to see how action in such cases is only taken if and when such videos go viral. And these aren't just two recent cases. Time and again, across states, we see governments across political parties compromising on these crucial meals for kids. These meals are aimed to become a reason why poor families send their kids to school to get their kids educated. And those very meals are becoming a risk to kids' health and nutrition in many parts of our country. In many cases, snakes, lizards, insects have been found in these meals. They've made hundreds of kids sick. Now at the end, more often than not, these stories just get buried in newspapers, they rarely make primetime debates on TV news, and they don't even go viral on social media very often. And hence such cases keep happening, and kids from underprivileged families have to keep eating this in the name of food. So make sure you don't let this story get buried today.
