The first election after the student uprising has got bad news for the BJP. Not only has the BJP lost two out of the three by-polls, but one of its most prestigious bastions has been taken away from it by the man who helped PM Modi come to power for the first time in 2014. Political analysts say that the BJP's aura of invincibility has been broken by these elections. How? Let's break it down into five simple points. First, Prashant Kishore has defeated the BJP in Patna's Bankipur. This seat has been with the BJP since it was formed in 2010. It was held by its current national president Nitin Nabeen for almost four terms and its father for over 10 years before that. So almost since 1995, this seat has been a high citadel of the BJP. It was almost a given that the BJP would retain the seat until Prashant Kishore fielded himself and managed to defeat the saffron candidate in the first election he ever fought. Now Prashant Kishore's party got less than 5% of the total vote in this very seat just six months ago And now it has managed to win almost 50% of the votes. Now, of course, part of the reason is Prashant Kishore contesting the election himself. But such a big swing in a matter of months clearly means something has changed drastically, which is where we come to point number three. This election has come right after the country witnessed one of its biggest public movements in decades. And after Delhi, Bihar had emerged as the biggest epicenter of the protest. You would have seen memes about Bihar's unique protests, but what happened in the state captured the simmering student discontent in a state that has the lowest higher education enrollment rate in the country Bihar is among the states most affected by paper leaks as well and that was visible in the outpouring on the streets of the state. Just over 100 kilometers away from Bankipur, the image of a police official using AK-47 on protesters sent shockwaves across the state. So first the anger over paper leaks, the mobilization and then the violent police cracked down the hundreds of detentions. This mood, experts say, was bound to find an electoral outlet somewhere. Now coming to the third point, Bakipur is a major youth or student hub. Almost a third of its total voters are between 18 to 29 years of age. And Prashant Kishore's open support to students' demand for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation struck a chord with Bakipur's young voters. Now fourth, lower voter turnout in Bakipur this time as compared to the 2025 assembly election. Many political experts point out that a section of the BJP's traditional voter didn't turn up in large enough numbers, while PK capitalized on the sentiment against the incumbent, both at the state and the centre. And lastly, the outcome that the Cockro-Janta Party protests managed to achieve may have also made some of the voters believe in an unconventional opposition force like Prashant Kishore. Because not only has the BJP been defeated in this seat, but the traditional opposition in the RJD has finished a distant third. Many say that the tide is slowly turning against the big incumbents and that the BJP must read the writing on the wall.
